I kappa B kinase epsilon (IKK epsilon ) is also known as IKBKE and IKKi. The classical active IKK complex, composed of IKK alpha , IKK beta , and two forms of processed IKK gamma , phosphorylates and inactivates I kappa B, resulting in the release and nuclear translocation of active NF-kappa B. IKK epsilon is an IKK-related kinase with 30% structural homology to IKK alpha and beta , and is present in a subset of IKK complexes. IKK epsilon activation has been implicated in the initiation of anti-viral gene expression and in the pathogenesis of breast cancer.
