Background
Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein in all organisms. It has the shape of a hollow sphere that permits entry of a variable amount of iron for storage as ferric hydroxide phosphate complexes. Mammalian liver and spleen ferritin (relative mass about 450,000) consists of 24 subunits of 2 species, the heavy subunit (relative mass = 21,000) and the light subunit (relative mass = 19,000). In models of spinal cord injury ferritin is found in activated microglial cells.
