Background
CD43 (leukosialin, sialophorin, also Ly-48 in mouse) is a type I transmembrane (TM) sialated mucin that is found on leukocytes and tumor cells. It is synthesized as a 397 amino acid (aa) precursor that contains a 19 aa signal sequence, a 234 aa extracellular region, a 23 aa TM domain, and a 123 aa cytoplasmic tail that contains an NLS. The extracellular region has 12% proline and 38% threonine and serine and shows both N- and O-linked glycosylation. Human CD43 extracellular region has less than 60% aa identity to the extracellular regions in rat and mouse.
