Background
Neural
proliferation and differentiation control protein 1 (NPDC1) is an approximately
34 kDa protein that is mainly expressed in lung and neural tissues and whose
expression is developmentally regulated and persists in the adult (1, 2). It binds a variety of cyclins and regulate
differentiation events in neuronal precursor cells (3). NPDC1 also binds the transcription factor,
E2F-1, which results in the inhibition of E2F-1 binding to DNA and the
corresponding transcription events (4). The
encoded protein of the human NPDC1 includes a 34 aa signal peptide, a 147 aa
extracellular domain (ECD), a 21 aa transmembrane region, followed by a carboxyl
terminus containing a PEST motif (rich in proline, glutamine, serine, and
threonine) which targets the protein for degradation (1). Alignment of the mature protein shows that
human NPDC1 shares 76% and 75% sequence identity with mouse and rat NPDC1,
respectively.
