Muscular Dystrophy, Tibial: Disease Bioinformatics

Tibial muscular dystrophy is a disorder that causes muscle weakness in the tibialis anterior muscle. Weakness of this muscle hinders the ability to move the foot up and down, and can cause foot drop, a condition that makes lifting the toes while walking difficult. Symptoms of tibial muscular dystrophy usually appear after age 35 and slowly worsen. Researchers have found that tibial muscular dystrophy is caused by a mutation in the TTN gene, which normally produces a protein that provides structure during muscle cell contraction. Tibial muscular dystrophy is inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder. Although there is no cure, most individuals with tibial muscular dystrophy maintain the ability to walk as they age.
