Celiac Disease: Disease Bioinformatics

Celiac Disease, or Gluten intolerance, is an immune response in the small intestine. When gluten is eaten, the immune system attacks the places in the small intestine that absorbs nutrients. Overtime, the reaction causes inflammation which damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents absorption of certain nutrients. The symptoms of Celiac disease include abdominal pain, nausea, and unexplained weight loss; these symptoms can become more severe because of the nutrients not being absorbed. Celiac disease can arise at any point in a person’s life and there is no cure. Celiac disease can be treated with a gluten-free diet which will let the lining of the small intestine heal. Also, multi-vitamins are sometimes prescribed to correct the previous deficiencies.
