Background
HIV-1 gp120 is a surface glycoprotein that enables viral attachment and entry into host cells. It is also involved in neurotoxicity and has been implicated in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. HIV-1 gp120 also induces apoptosis in neuronal cells by signaling mitochondrial-death proteins which may upregulate the death receptor, Fas. Because HIV gp120 is necessary for HIV-1 to enter CD4 cells, gp120 is one of the main targets of HIV vaccine research.
