Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease is also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and as Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease. The disease is characterized by chronically poor airflow which worsens as time goes on. The main symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, and increased mucus production. Most people with chronic bronchitis have Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease, and the disease is often a mixture between chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The main cause of COAD is smoking tobacco, but it may also be caused by long-term exposure to lung irritants, or, extremely rarely, genetics. Treatment includes quitting smoking, or in more severe cases, medications or oxygen treatment. In life-threatening cases, lung surgeries such as lung volume reduction surgery or lung transplants are used to treat Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease.
