Brain Death: Disease Bioinformatics

Brain death is a complete and total cessation of all brain activity, including the involuntary brain activity that is necessary to sustain life. Brain death is the result of the necrosis of neurons due to a loss of oxygen in the brain. Patients classified as brain dead are typically considered dead, even if the neuronal death occurs only in the brain stem, as that results in an end of function of the respiratory system. A patient who has suffered from brain death will not respond to pain or other nerve reflexes. The organs of brain dead patients are typically used in transplants, as vasopressors and mechanical ventilation can keep the organs functional.
