Tinea: Disease Bioinformatics

Tinea is a type of fungal skin infection that manifests on external surfaces of the body with no pathological symptoms. Tinea, also known as ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch, is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. The tinea infection often appears as red, itchy blotches, and depending on the location of the infection can cause hair loss. The tinea infection is highly contagious both to other people and to other parts of the same person’s body, so it is recommended to disinfect combs, pillows, hats, and other possessions that touch the infected site after each use. Tinea can be treated with the use of oral and topical antifungal medications.
