Thrombosis is the interruption of blood flow by a clot in the blood vessels. Thrombosis can happen in either the veins or the arteries and can be caused by obesity, particular medications, or fractures. Symptoms of Thrombosis include varicose veins, swelling in the extremities, and isolated pain. Thrombosis can be treated with anti-clotting medications, enzymes that brake down the clot, and catheters to expand the affected vein. Thrombosis is common in hospital complications following surgeries, or prolonged immobility.
