Hypocholestesterolemia occurs when an individual naturally low cholesterol levels (below 120 mg/dL) without medicinal assistance. Another criteria that is used to diagnose hypocholesterolemia is if the individual's LDL cholesterol is below the 5th percentile of people in your same age, gender, and race. This low level of cholesterol may be inherited and can be an indicator of a larger medical issue such as: liver disease, critical illness, poor nutrition, and cancer. However, in a more immediate impairment, immune system, vitamin absorption, and nerve conduction can all be compromised with hypocholesterolemia. Hormones, neurotransmitters, and mental health may be related to hypocholesterolemia as depression and suicide can be a side effect of hypocholesterolemia.
