C. elegans is a popular model organism for gene and protein expression studies. This transparent eukaryotic nematode is useful due to its relatively small genome (9.7x10^7 bps) and simple genomic processes compared to higher eukaryotes, as well as the ease of growing large populations. In 1998, C. elegans became the first multicellular organism to have its genome completely sequenced and it has remained a fundamental tool for genomic research ever since.
