Inhibin Secretion Pathway Bioinformatics

Inhibin is a protein complex that works to downregulate the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and inhibits its secretion. Inhibin is produced in the gonads of both sexes; more specifically, it is produced most highly in the gonads, pituitary gland, corpeus luteum, and placentas in females and in the Sertoli cells in males, when stimulated by androgens. There are two types of inhibin: inhibin A, which is only located in females and is most highly expressed in the mid-luteal phase, which suggests it is made in and secreted from the luteus, and inhibin B, which is found in both sexes, and is expressed most highly in females in the early- to mid- follicular phase. The secretion of inhibin helps to regulate the reproductive cycle, and abnormal levels of this protein can lead to disorders such as Down syndrome in the fetus and infertility in men.
