Cancer Patients And Suicide And Depression: Disease Bioinformatics

Suicide and depression is common among individuals diagnosed with cancer. Increased risk for thoughts of suicide as well as depression is most frequent a few months after diagnosis, but tend to curb with time. Risk for suicide increases with older age, being male, and severity of diagnosis, level on pain, spirituality, social structure, and inability to work. The highest incidence of suicide has been reported in patients with oral, pharyngeal, lung, and HIV positive patients with Kaposi sarcoma, however this information may not be entirely correct as individuals may not report death as suicide in these situations. Patients that are experiencing such feelings should use medications to alleviate distress and focus on symptom management. Mobilizng support for the patient as well as maintaining frequent contact and support may reduce risk for suicide.
