Pancreatitis: Disease Bioinformatics

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach that releases strong digestive enzymes into the small intestine and insulin into the blood stream. Pancreatitis occurs when activation of the digestive enzymes occurs before they enter the small intestine, causing them to attack the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis is often caused by gallstones and occurs suddenly with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and severe pain in the upper abdomen. With treatment, acute pancreatitis goes away in a couple of days. Chronic pancreatitis often develops after an incident of acute pancreatitis. Prolonged alcohol abuse may contribute to chronic pancreatitis. Chronic pancreatitis continues to worsen over time and does not improve, but treatment may relieve pain.
