Meningitis, Pneumococcal: Disease Bioinformatics

Meningitis causes inflammation of the meninges which is the protective membranes surrounding the in the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation is caused by an infection in the fluid surrounding the brain or spinal. Streptococcus pneumonia, also called pneumococcus, causes Pneumococcal Meningitis which is a type of bacterial meningitis. Pneumococcal Meningitis is the most common form of bacterial meningitis in adults and the second most common cause of bacterial meningitis in children. With a 20% fatality rate, Pneumococcal Meningitis needs to be treated with antibiotics immediately. Brain damage and hearing loss can be long term effects of Pneumococcal Meningitis.
