Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome is a condition in obese individuals which causes them to fail to breathe frequently enough or deeply enough for normal respiration. As a result, individuals with Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome have low oxygen levels, high carbon-dioxide levels, and periods during the night when their breathing stops (sleep apnea). Symptoms of this condition include shortness of breath, continual fatigue, depression, cyanosis, red skin color, and swollen legs. The cause of Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome is not known; however, some scientists believe it comes as a result of excess weight that puts a strain on the lungs. This condition is alleviated by weight loss and through the usage of mechanical ventilation.
